Elementary

As we approach Holy week, it is a great opportunity to open the bible with your kids.  Take time each time to reach part of the story of Jesus’ last week on earth. If you have The Jesus Storybook Bible, it is a great reference for all kids and can be broken into 4 parts.  Start on page 276 with The servant king.  On Wednesday, continue with a dark night in the garden on page 294.  On Friday read the sun stops shining on page 302 and on Easter, read through God’s wonderful surprise on page on 310.

This weekend was Palm Sunday but it wasn’t the focus in DV for our elementary kids. We focused on Jesus in the garden and prayer.  Do you pray with your kids?  Do they see you pray? Whether it is in the morning, at dinner or before bed, this week is a great opportunity to have a conversation with your kids about praying.  Jesus modeled this behavior for us many times in the Bible from the Lord’s prayer to this text where he is crying out to his Father.

This Week We’re Discovering

We took a look at the very garden where Jesus showed an unbelievable understanding of how important it was to put the will of the Father ahead of His own. Jesus knew why He came to earth. While He prayed for His Father to make another way, ultimately Jesus knew that He had to let go of what He wanted for the sake of saving the world from sin.

Bottom Line: I can put others first by letting go of what I want.

At some point in our lives, we’ll be faced with a decision to give up something we want for what someone else wants. For Jesus, this was a matter of life and death. While that may not be the case for us, showing humility in these situations is still important. We pray that kids will realize that showing humility is often more important than getting their way.

This Month’s Memory Verse:

This verse is part of a passage that describes Jesus’ humility. Jesus left everything He deserved to humble Himself to save us. As we respond to Jesus’ love, we can show humility as we love on those around us.

Extra Memory Verses:

Week 1Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves..

Week 2: Romans 12:16  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

Week 3:Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Week 4: John 13: 14-15 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

Week 5: Philippians 2:3  Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

God Time Card:

Godtime Cards are now together with the Family Talk and are given in a packet.  You receive the entire month all at once. This is similar to BTW for adults, but for your kids!

Music:

Do you know what songs your kids are singing this month? Click  MUSIC for a direct link to the Ada Bible Church playlist. You will also be able to purchase the songs your child will be singing this month.

Widget:

Truth be told, our default setting is “me first,” but humility calls for a different route. Help your kids make a “U-turn” with this month’s widget, a booklet of ten U-FIRST TICKETS. Parents can challenge each child to look for opportunities throughout the month to put others first, whether it’s letting someone ahead of them in line or allowing a sibling to choose the evening’s movie.

When a child puts someone else first, parents can reward them with a U-First Ticket. After a kid has collected all ten tickets, families decide together upon a reward.
